Black History Unleashed

For generations, the histories of African-descended peoples have been taught in isolation — if they have been taught at all. The story of Ancient Egypt is separated from the story of West African empires. The Haitian Revolution is divorced from the broader narrative of resistance that connects it to Jamaica’s Maroon Wars, the Stono Rebellion in South Carolina, and the anti-colonial movements of the twentieth century. The African Descendants Historical Timeline was created to solve this fundamental problem. The goal has always been to build something that reflects the full depth and breadth of our collective history.

Black History Unleashed is a free, publicly accessible web application that organizes historical events through an intuitive, hierarchical filtering system. Users can explore history by geographic region — drilling down from broad categories like “Africa” or “Americas” into specific nations such as Ghana, Ethiopia, Haiti, or Jamaica — or by thematic periods, such as the color-coded eras of United States history that range from the Colonial Period through the Modern Era.
